Alex Whitehouse

I specialise in creating unified branding for the web. So if your business needs a design overhaul, I can create everything from a website, photography associated to your business and promotional materials for all your social media channels. I can also translate these designs across to traditional print materials, such as business cards or letterheads. Whether designing just a website or a complete branding package, my approach remains the same; once we have agreed on a design brief, I can create colour palettes, font choices and photographic styles.

This can then be applied across all platforms and make a uniform, recognisable,  beautifully crafted brand.

Portfolio – Legal Website

For this project, I started by taking a selection of photos in and around the Royal Courts of Justice. These images of London form the backbone of the visual identity of the website. Once I had assembled the site, particular care was taken to maximise search engine rankings.

Portfolio – Coffee Website

This website initially started as a way to promote a start-up coffee company. After producing an initial design, the clients wished to change the focus of the site towards being able to sell their coffee to the public and trade contacts. This meant creating an easy to use sales front, with PayPal integration.

Portfolio – Wine Maker

This project was multifaceted. Firstly, I travelled with the client to Puglia, Italy to photograph the winemaking process, the facilities and the vineyards. These images were then used to create the website, whilst additional product photography was taken to showcase the wine portfolio. In addition, I created unified branding for business cards and letterheads.

  • I live in the in the South East of England. I spend a lot of my time between Suffolk and London, but happily travel much further for interesting opportunities.

  • Yes. Depending on the nature of the work required, I can easily work with clients who are based outside the UK. Certain tasks, for example photography/videography, may require site visits but could be supplied by another individual. With tools such as Skype, it is easier than ever to work with overseas clients.

  • Yes, absolutely. I prefer to conduct meetings face to face, particularly when establishing an initial design brief. I love to travel, so providing you can contribute to my reasonable travel expenses, I’m there!

  • Occasionally other projects may prevent me from able to take on short notice work, but in most cases I can help. This may however incur higher fees than usual.

  • The most basic of websites can be assembled in a matter of days, providing I’m given all the written content, visual material and the client has a clear idea of what they want it to look like. The reality is that this is rarely the case, so deadlines are something I like to discuss in my initial meetings with the client.

  • I tend to use my design brief as a means to establish a clear idea of branding and design. The more input you can give as to your desired outcome the easier it makes my job! Once we reach an agreement on the desired outcome, then usually the amount of amendments you may wish to make should hopefully be relatively minor. Substantial changes to core design elements may incur additional charges.

  • No. I am not a copywriter, nor am I an expert in your business or organisation.

  • This is entirely dependent on your requirements. I can provide training on how to update the website and show you how to manage it if required. If you would prefer me to manage it for you, I am happy to do, at an agreed fee.

  • This is often one of the first questions many clients ask me and it is notoriously tricky to answer. Often, clients are unaware that getting a website online is often half the story. The amount of time I might spend optimising a website for search engine rankings, or other similar work behind the scenes often affects the success of a website.  Therefore the amount I charge is contingent on the work required. This obviously varies from client to client.

  • Email is the preferred method of initial contact. This ensures that we both have a written record of what is discussed.
